What Is an AI Visibility Score?
An AI Visibility Score is a composite metric that measures how well your website is optimized for discovery, comprehension, and recommendation by AI platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Grok, and Google AI.
Think of it as a credit score for AI search. Just as a FICO score aggregates multiple financial signals into a single number that predicts creditworthiness, an AI Visibility Score aggregates multiple technical and content signals into a single number that predicts whether AI will recommend your business.
Why Does This Exist?
Traditional SEO tools measure how well your site ranks on Google. But increasingly, people aren't Googling — they're asking AI. And AI recommendation works on completely different signals than search ranking.
A law firm can rank #1 on Google for "personal injury lawyer Chicago" and still be completely absent from ChatGPT's response to that same question. The two systems evaluate different things. An AI Visibility Score bridges this gap by measuring the signals that AI platforms actually use.
What Gets Measured
A rigorous AI Visibility Score evaluates multiple dimensions simultaneously. There is no single factor that determines your score — it's the interaction between them that matters.
Crawlability — Can AI bots physically access your site? Are they blocked by robots.txt? Can they discover all your important pages via sitemap?
Comprehension — Once AI reads your content, can it understand what you do? Is there structured data (JSON-LD schema) that makes your services, location, and credentials machine-readable?
Performance — Does your site respond fast enough for AI crawlers? Is critical content visible without JavaScript execution? AI crawlers have timeouts and rendering limitations.
Trust — Does your site have security credentials (SSL, security headers) that AI platforms use as baseline trust indicators?
AI-Specific Standards — Have you adopted emerging standards like llms.txt that are specifically designed for AI consumption?
The Scoring Scale
Most AI Visibility Scores use a 0–100 scale with letter grades:
A (90–100): Your site is fully optimized for AI recommendation. AI crawlers have complete access, your structured data is comprehensive, and your content is machine-readable. You're likely already appearing in AI responses.
B (80–89): Strong foundation with minor gaps. You're visible to AI but may be losing to competitors who've optimized more thoroughly.
C (70–79): Mixed signals. Some checks pass, others fail. AI can partially understand your site but may not trust it enough to recommend with confidence.
D (60–69): Significant gaps. AI crawlers face access issues or cannot extract meaningful structured data from your site.
F (below 60): Effectively invisible to AI. Multiple critical failures prevent AI platforms from crawling, understanding, or trusting your site.
What's a Typical Score?
In our analysis of over 1,000 law firm websites, the median AI Visibility Score is 58 — an F grade. The most common failures are blocked AI crawlers in robots.txt (35.7% of firms), missing JSON-LD schema (over 60%), and absent llms.txt files (over 97%).
The good news: every factor that influences the score is fixable. And because so few firms have optimized for AI yet, even basic improvements create significant competitive advantage.
How Often Should You Check?
AI platforms update their crawling behavior, model architectures, and recommendation logic regularly. A score that's accurate today may not reflect changes in how AI evaluates your site next month. Monthly monitoring is the baseline; firms in competitive markets benefit from weekly or daily tracking to catch issues before they cost leads.
